About the Study
The purpose of this study is to identify how fear approach, avoidance, and fear influence the transition to full remission in individuals with anorexia nervosa in partial remission. Participants will be asked to do an initial interview over the phone and then complete a series of short questionnaires and activities online, followed by daily questions (1-3 minutes long) sent to their mobile device five times a day for three weeks, which will ask about eating disorder symptoms, anxiety, avoidance, and approach.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I qualify for this study?
Anyone who has a history of anorexia nervosa and is actively in partial remission (weight restored in the past year [from BMI < 18.5 to BMI > 18.5]; still experiencing eating disorder thoughts and urges). You must be at least 18 years old to participate. The study is completely online - you can participate from anywhere in the world.
*It is important to note that BMI is an arbitrary and flawed measure. Anorexia nervosa impacts individuals of all body sizes, and BMI does not determine the seriousness or validity of one's eating disorder. These BMI criteria are required for the current study, but are not inclusive of everyone who is in AN recovery.
How will this benefit others?
This study will identify mechanisms that are important in reaching full and lasting remission from anorexia nervosa. This research will inform step down care and relapse prevention interventions that are optimal for helping people recovering from anorexia nervosa.
What is the time commitment for this study?
For this study, you will be required to complete an initial phone screening, which will last about 30 minutes. If you qualify for this study, you will be asked to complete online questionnaires, which should take about 30 minutes. You will be asked to complete three behavioral activities on your computer and phone that will take about 60-90 minutes total. There will also be 1-3 minute questionnaires sent to your mobile device 5 times a day for three weeks. At the end of the study, you will complete final questionnaires online, which should take about 30 minutes. The total time commitment is estimated to be about 6 hours including all parts of the study, including phone surveys.
What is the purpose of the phone screening?
During the phone screening you will be asked about eating and weight-related concerns and symptoms. We will also ask you about several additional psychological symptoms and behaviors in order to assess your eligibility for the study. We will also provide a brief training on the behavioral activities and phone questionnaires. The phone screening will last approximately 30 minutes, and at the end of the screening we will let you know if you meet criteria to participate in the study.
If criteria to participate in the study are met, what are the next steps?
If you meet criteria, you will then be given a link to complete online questionnaires and behavioral activities. These questionnaires will take approximately 30 minutes and the behavioral activities will take 60-90 minutes. You will then have questions sent to you via your mobile device 5x a day for three weeks. These questions take about 1-3 minutes each to complete.
Is this a paid study?
You will receive compensation of up to $100 via gift card. You will be paid $10 for completing the initial questionnaires, $20 for completing the behavioral activities, up to $60 for completing the phone questionnaires based on the percentage you complete, and $10 for completing the final questionnaires.
Are there any risks associated with participating?
You may feel uncomfortable as a result of answering questions about your eating disorder and anxiety or while participating in the assessment activities.
