Our Research
The EAT laboratory and clinic is dedicated to research leading to better treatments for eating disorders. The point of our clinical research is to help alleviate human suffering and impairment caused by these deadly illnesses. Below is a sample of several research questions we are currently trying to answer:
Why do eating disorders and anxiety disorders co-occur so frequently? We are conducting research to figure out why eating disorders and anxiety disorders are highly comorbid. Specifically, we have several research projects testing social appearance anxiety, perfectionism, and fear of negative evaluation as shared vulnerabilities between social anxiety and eating disorders across time. We are testing why OCD and eating disorders are highly comorbid. Our ultimate goal is to be able to design treatments that target underlying, shared vulnerabilities, instead of categorical disorders.
Can we apply exposure therapy to the eating disorders?Exposure therapy is the therapy of choice for all anxiety disorders. Given that a high proportion of individuals with eating disorders also suffer from anxiety, it seems plausible that exposure therapy could be extended to the eating disorders. We have several projects testing exposure therapy for eating disorders. For example, we are testing both an online and in-person clinical trial of imaginal exposure therapy. Our lab is also interested in testing interoceptive exposure therapy, mirror exposure therapy, and food exposure.
How can we use technology to improve the treatment of eating disorders?Technology has the ability to improve our current treatments, as well as reach more individuals who need treatment. We are using an iphone application to understand what impairs learning during mealtime in individuals diagnosed with anorexia nervosa. Additional research projects in our lab using technology are: virtual reality treatment of eating disorders, sensor-technology assessing heart-rate, acceleration, and galvanic skin response that correlates with eating disorder cognitions and behaviors, and developing machine learning algorithms to predict eating disorder behaviors.
Personalizing Treatment: Network AnalysisNetwork analysis is a type of analysis that can help us understand how symptoms of mental disorders maintain the illness. Network analysis can also be used to identify maintaining symptoms of eating disorders within one individual. We have several projects examining how eating disorder symptoms maintain themselves both across and within individuals, as well as how symptoms of comorbid anxiety and eating disorders interact with each other. The goal here is to be able to design personalized interventions that target central symptoms, maximizing the efficacy of these interventions and adapting existing one-size-fits-all treatments to the individual.
